D1 hockey splits home-opening series vs. Midland

ALBERT LEA, Minn. - After playing their first three series on the road, the Waldorf D1 hockey team finally played in front of the home fans for a two-game series against Midland at Albert Lea City Arena. The Warriors picked up a 3-2 win Friday night before falling 9-2 Saturday afternoon.

Friday night, Midland scored the first two goals of the game before Waldorf tallied the final three to gain the victory. Dominic Toews got Waldorf on the scoreboard 4:38 into the second period off assists from Geoffrey Dick and Liam Wallace. Just over three minutes later, Mackenzie Bolger added the equalizing goal off a feed from Zak Molstad. The game remained tied until the closing minutes of the third when Dick broke the tie with an assisted goal with just 2:15 remaining. Waldorf goalie Vaughn Holbeche was able to keep Midland scoreless over the final two minutes to preserve the 3-2 Waldorf win.

Saturday's game started off well for Waldorf. Audun Caple scored 5:58 into the contest to give Waldorf the early lead. Molstad and Bolger assisted on the tally. Over six minutes later, Toews added his second goal of the series off assists from JJ Adams and Gunnar Vignaroli for a 2-0 Waldorf lead. Midland scored 32 seconds later. The Warriors led 2-1 after the first period. The last two periods was all Midland. They scored twice in the second period and then six times in the third to gain the 9-2 win and split the series.

Waldorf (3-5) next hosts McKendree October 18-19 in Albert Lea.
