FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Waldorf baseball team closed out their home conference weekend series against Mayville State. The Warriors dropped the first game 5-6 and won the second 10-3.
To start the first game, the Comets scored in the 1st and 2nd innings from RBI singles to take a 0-2 lead.
Ryan Webster (SO/Las Vegas, NV) scored the first run for the Warriors in the bottom of the 5th inning off of a Comet error.
The Comets scored their third run in the top of the 6th inning. Davis Churchman (SR/Ankeny, IA) got an RBI single in the bottom of the inning with Matthew Ferreira (SR/Spring Creek, NV) scoring.
In the 7th inning, the Comets extended their lead by a run.
Atticus Smith (SO/Kent, WA) got an RBI single in the bottom of the 7th getting AJ Toulouse (FR/Marshall, MN) to score. Robert Gurney (FR/Campbell River, BC) then got a sacrifice fly out which allowed Smith to tie the game 4-4.
In the 8th inning, Ferreira scored the go-ahead run off of a double from Damien Sanchez (JR/Riverside, CA).
The Comets went on to win the game 6-5.
Zach Meyer (JR/Gilbert, AZ) pitched six innings for the Warriors and finished with six strikeouts.
For game two, the Warriors started off strong by scoring seven runs in the 1st inning.
In the 2nd inning, the Comets scored all three of their runs.
Churchman got a two-run RBI triple in the bottom of the 5th inning and Sanchez closed the game with an RBI single with Churchman scoring the final run. The Warriors won 10-3.
Skyler Yarborough (JR/The Colony, TX) pitched the first two innings and had one strikeout with one hit. Ryuya Kato (JR/Tokyo, Japan) finished the game with two strikeouts. Churchman went 3-3 with three RBIs and two runs.
The Warriors are now 12-16 overall and 7-5 in conference play. Next up is an away non-conference matchup against Northwestern on Tuesday, April 4th starting at 4 p.m.
