Strong effort earns Waldorf DH split

FOREST CITY, Iowa - Waldorf scored a lot early and scored a lot late to earn a win over Viterbo in the second game of an NSAA doubleheader Saturday in Forest City.

Waldorf came out strong in the second game of the doubleheader after falling to Viterbo 7-3 in the opener. In the bottom of the first, Zach Meyer drew a two-out walk. Ryan Webster followed with an infield single. Atticus Smith would drive them both in with a double to center. Waldorf put up another crooked number in the second, again after two outs were recorded. Juan Jorge and Ian Carr both drew walks. Kolby Amaral doubled to right center to plate them both. Meyer followed with an RBI double of his own to give Waldorf a 5-0 lead. Viterbo scored the game's next three runs to trim Waldorf's lead to 5-3. In the fourth, Amaral belted a two-out home run to right center to give the Warriors a 6-3 lead. Waldorf broke the game open in the sixth. Amaral was the catalyst again as he the first two runs of the frame scored of his RBI single and error. Webster's double plated two more runs. An RBI grounder scored the inning's fifth run as Waldorf took an 11-3 lead. Waldorf would end the game early in the seventh. Ian Carr and Amaral hit back-to-back home runs. Meyer later doubled. Smith ended the game with an RBI single to score Meyer and give Waldorf a 14-4 seven-inning win. Amaral went 4-5 with two home runs and five RBI in the second game. Meyer, Webster, and Smith each had two hits. Ryuya Kato was forced into duty in the third inning and pitched masterfully over the final 4.2 innings to get the win. He allowed only one earned run on five hits.

Waldorf (18-21, 8-10 in NSAA) returns to the home diamond for Senior Day Sunday against Viterbo. First game of the doubleheader starts at noon.
