Warriors Battle Against Cougars on the Road

CHICAGO, IL – The Waldorf women's basketball team had a quick turnaround for another non-conference road game against the Saint Xavier (IL) Cougars on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors were defeated 85-57.

"Ran into a bit of a buzz saw right off the bat, but proud of how we recovered," Head Coach Shawn Chaffin stated. "The last 3 quarters were pretty tight, and when things got tough, our players responded."

1st Quarter: Lizzie Garza (SR/Brownsville, TX) and Camryn McQuery (JR/Waseca, MN) scored layups to trail the Cougars 6-12. Lindsay Field (SR, Eyota, MN) added two points and Brooklynn Anderson (FR/Shorewood, WI) made three throws, but the Cougars kept their lead to end the quarter 31-12.

2nd Quarter: Waldorf's defense held Saint Xavier to just nine points in the second quarter. Brooke Dial (FR/Dallas, TX) scored the five straight points for the Warriors. Garza and Sandra Christian (SR/Gainesville, TX) added back-to-back three-pointers, the Warriors trailed 40-24 going into the second half.

3rd Quarter: Edosa Ogbemudia (SO/East Bethel, MN) made a jump shot and Fatou Barry (JR/Gwinnett, GA) added a layup for Waldorf. Garza drained a three and made two free-throws and Dial added another three. Field and Alyah Abrahamson (SO/Browersville, MN) each added two points and the Warriors were down 66-41.

4th Quarter: The Warriors went on a seven-point run that consisted of two made free-throws from Ogbemudia, a layup by Dial, a three-pointer, and a free throw by Abrahamson. Garza scored four points and Sophia Laurel (FR/Santa Maria, CA) closed out the half with a layup. The Warriors lost 85-57.

Chaffin added, "Overall pleased to split a tough road trip as we get closer to the start of league."

Garza finished with a team-high of 16 points and 6 rebounds, with 2 assists. Dial added 11 points and 6 rebounds and Abrahamson had 4 steals and 2 assists.

Next up, the women's basketball team will return to Hanson Fieldhouse after the New Year for a non-conference game against Minnesota-Morris on Wednesday, January 3rd. Tip-off is at 3 pm.
