Warriors Open NSAA Play in Overtime Against V-Hawks

LaCROSSE, WI – The Waldorf women's basketball team opened NSAA conference play at Viterbo on Wednesday afternoon. In an overtime game, the Warriors were defeated 83-78.

"That was a wild game. Both teams made incredible comebacks and left everything on the floor," stated Head Coach Shawn Chaffin. "We had a rough stretch to finish out the 2nd quarter, but I was pleased with how we responded."

1st Quarter: Lizzie Garza (SR?Brownsville, TX) opened the game with an early three-pointer before the V-Hawks scored 12 points. Sandra Christian (SR/Gainesville, TX) and Brooke Dial (FR/Dallas, TX) stopped the run with back-to-back threes, assisted by Fatou Barry (JR/Gwinnett, GA). Edosa Ogbeumdia (SO/East Bethel, MN) and Cloey Dmytruk (SO/St. Paul, MN) tied the game at 15. Alyah Abrahamson (SO/Browersville, MN) scored a go-ahead jump shot and Dial closed out the quarter with a layup. The Warriors were up 20-17.

2nd Quarter: Dmytruk drained a three and Dial got fouled on a made shot for a three-point play. The V-Hawks brought the game within one before Dmytruk made a second three-pointer. Christian also made another three to go up 33-29. The V-Hawks ended the half with a 15-0 run to take the lead 44-33.

3rd Quarter: With three made three-pointers by Dial, the Warriors trailed by four. Garza brought the game within two points and Dial tied the game with a layup. The Warriors took the lead at the end of the quarter, 55-54, with two free throws from Ogbemudia.

4th Quarter: Christian made a three to take a four point lead over the V-Hawks with just under six minutes left in regulation. Abrahamson forced a V-Hawk turnover with a steal and Dial made a layup. Viterbo took the lead with four made free-throws. With 18 seconds left, Garza made a jump shot for a one-point lead. The V-Hawks made one free throw to tie the game and go into overtime.

Overtime: Viterbo scored five straight points. Abrahamson went 2-2 from the free-throw line. Lindsay Field grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup to trail 77-76. The V-Hawks made four free-throws to secure the win, 83-78.

Chaffin added, "We continue to make progress, and as the only league game tonight, both teams put on a show."

Dial finished the game with a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds, with 2 steals. Ogbemudia had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. Abrahamson added 9 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists and Garza tallied 11 points.

Next up, the Warriors will be back on the road for a conference game against Mayville State on Saturday, January 13th. Tipoff is at 3 pm.
