MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Sixth-inning offensive explosions were the difference in both games of a doubleheader baseball split between Midway and Waldorf (Iowa) Sunday.
The Eagles brought six men home in the sixth of 14-6 game one win, only to see the Warriors counter with an eight-spot in game two, as Waldorf secured a series win with a 14-5 victory.
MIDWAY 14, WALDORF 6
A 5-5 game got blown wide open in the sixth inning, when the Eagles scored six runs and brought 10 batters to the plate.
Shane Taylor led off the inning with a single before Josh Halterman put runners on second and third with a double. This was part of a monster game for Halterman, who finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and three runs, while also kicking off the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning.
After a wild pitch brought Taylor home, Nick Eastham made it 8-5 with a two-run double. Two batters later, Britten Robinson capped the monster surge with a two-out, three-run home run. It was the second homer of the game for Robinson, who also hit a solo shot in the second.
Any hopes the Warriors may have had were then dashed in the top of the seventh, when Eastham hit the team's fourth home run of the game, a three-run blast to close out his five-RBI game.
It marked the most home runs the Eagles have had since hitting five in a 16-15 win against West Virginia Tech last season.
WALDORF 14, MIDWAY 5
Eastham picked up where he left off with a solo home run in the second, then another home run, a three-run shot by Taylor, capped a four-run fourth inning that had Midway up 5-4.
The Warriors answered with a run in the fifth, then, just as the Eagles did the game prior, caught fire in the sixth inning to break open a 5-5 game.
Three walks and an error did little to help the Eagles' cause, as the inning's first four runs were scored before an out was recorded.
Midway appeared to give itself a chance to stay in the game when Jesse Komoroski recorded consecutive strikeouts with the bases loaded, only for Waldorf's Peter Ordonio to squash any comeback hopes with a two-out grand slam.
After traveling for their first seven games of the season, the 3-4 Eagles will be at home for the next nine, starting with a home-opening doubleheader against Huntington (Ind.) next Friday. The opener is currently set to begin at noon.
