
Baseball Smacks Six Home Runs to Sweep First Day in Iowa
Baseball closed out the first day of action in Forest City, Iowa, with another slugfest against Waldorf. The Tigers came out on top, 18-9, behind another six-home run game.
Aaron Vulcano started the scoring with a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Tigers the lead. Waldorf took the lead in the fourth inning with four runs. Doane went back in front in the fifth inning as Sam Kwapnioski tied the game with a home run and Vulcano added a two-run home run for his second blast of the game.
In the sixth inning, Doane added five runs. Justin Nevells reached on an error and plated Taiyo Takahashi for the first run. Logan Amick had an RBI-single to drive in Nevells for the second run. Kwapnioski smacked his second home run, a three-run shot to put the Tigers up 11-4. Waldorf cut into the lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning.
Amick started the scoring in the seventh inning with an RBI-groundout to plate Nevells. Aaron Vulcano delivered a bases loaded single to drive in Kwapnioski and Johnny Vulcano for a 14-6 lead. In the eighth, Takahashi led off the inning with a solo home run. Waldorf homered twice in the bottom of the inning, leaving Doane in front, 15-9.
In the ninth inning, Johnny Vulcano homered for the first run of three in the inning. The final two runs scored without the ball put in play by the Tigers. A wild pitch allowed Max Harris to score and a passed ball allowed Aaron Vulcano to score.
Riley Plummer started on the mound for the Tigers and picked up his sixth win of the season. He went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out four. Ethan Merk threw 3.0 innings, allowing five runs on five hits. Derek Mendoza threw a scoreless inning to close out the game.
Doane finished with 15 hits in the game, nine via an extra base hit. Kwapnioski was 4-for-6 with three runs and four RBI. Aaron Vulcano was 3-for-5 with three runs and seven RBI. Amick, Jordan Bond, and Takahashi had two hits apiece.
On Sunday, the teams will wrap up their series with a doubleheader starting at noon.
