Yellowjackets Open Season Strong, Overcome Challenges to Defeat Waldorf

Forest City, IA – Graceland University's women's basketball team tipped off the 2024-2025 season with a commanding 69-58 road win over Waldorf University. Despite being shorthanded, the Yellowjackets leveraged high-energy defense and consistent execution, setting the tone for a promising season.

Leading from the outset, Graceland outpaced Waldorf with aggressive defensive schemes and a flexible offense that adapted to a new, pressing style of play. The Yellowjackets established an early 20-8 lead in the first quarter, demonstrating their ability to apply defensive pressure and capitalize on turnovers. Graceland maintained a lead throughout the game, with Waldorf briefly narrowing the gap in the third quarter before Graceland sealed the win with a strong fourth quarter.

With a team-high of 16 points and seven rebounds, Camila Barreno made her presence felt both in scoring and on the boards. Maxine Ampofo contributed significantly, recording a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, underscoring the team's focus on controlling the glass. Sophia Rodriguez also had a solid outing off the bench, contributing 13 points and three rebounds, including crucial three-point shots that extended Graceland's lead.

Head Coach Willie Scott highlighted the challenges of adjusting to a different style of play, noting, "Great win — it was nice to have the scrimmage ahead of time, and we were a little shorthanded today. Because of that, we're having to change how we play." He praised the team's adaptability and resilience, adding, "We've got to be ready to play every game — we have no choice. We're going to be shorthanded until the second semester, so we'll be small and pressing hard on defense. Pivoting from one style to another because we aren't full-strength until after Christmas didn't phase us today, and I'm proud of how they played."

Graceland shot 36.8% from the field, with an impressive 31.8% from beyond the arc. Their defensive intensity translated into 20 points off turnovers and a 55-49 advantage in rebounds, underscoring the team's control in the paint. Waldorf, led by Brooke Dial's 27 points, made periodic runs but struggled against Graceland's persistent pressure and rebounding.

Reflecting on the game, Scott emphasized the importance of adaptability and growth, stating, "This was a great start to the season." Graceland's aggressive approach and cohesive team play helped them maintain control, even with adjustments on both ends of the floor.

Looking ahead, Graceland opens its home schedule on Wednesday, tipping off at 5 p.m. against former HAAC foe Avila University in the Morden Center.
