FOREST CITY, Iowa – For the first time in Great Plains Athletic Conference play, the Morningside University women's basketball team defeated Waldorf 78-71.
The (RV) Mustangs (4-3, 2-2 GPAC) led by as many as 10 points early in the second half, but the Warriors took the lead later in the quarter. Dani Peterson hit the go-ahead layup with 2 minutes, 1 second left in the third quarter, and the Mustangs didn't look back after that.
They were a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line during the fourth quarter, and 9 of 11 overall.
Morningside shot 60 percent during the first quarter, making nine of 15 shots. Lily Vollertsen scored seven of her 13 overall points during the first 10 minutes. It was also 44 percent from the floor during the second quarter.
Alexis Spier was one assist away from a double-double. She led the Mustangs with 24 points, and also had nine assists. Spier made four of the five made 3-pointers.
