A Historic Night for Waldorf Football with an Win Over Mayville State

MAYVILLE, ND – The Waldorf football was on the road for a conference game against Mayville State on Saturday afternoon. With scoring eight touchdowns and 551 total offensive yards, the Warriors won 56-34.
Jatoviay Hill became the all-time leading rusher breaking a four-year program record with 2,001 yards. The record was previously held by Hilton Joseph from 2016-19 with 1,834 yards. Hill marks the first 2,000-yard rusher in four-year program history. Hill scored five touchdowns, tying the single game record that is held by Al Burrell in 1967.
On Waldorf's first drive, Jatoviay Hill (JR/Davenport, IA) rushed for 15 yards before scoring a 55-yard rushing touchdown to give the Warriors an early 7-0 lead.
The Warrior defense forced the Comets to have to punt on their first drive of the game. The Comets returned the favor to force the Warriors to punt.
Mayville State had an eight-play drive, for 75-yards to score their first touchdown to tie the game 7-7.
On offense, the Warriors struggled to produce and had punt.
The Comets opened the second quarter with a touchdown to take the lead at 7-14.
With 11 minutes left in the first half, the Warriors started on Mayville's 29-yard line. Quarterback Jordan Cooper (SR/New Caney, TX) completed a 23-yard pass to Dom Watt (SR/Hollywood, FL). Hill scored his second touchdown to tie the game at 14.
The Waldorf defense was able to keep Mayville State from scoring a touchdown, which resulted into the Comets scoring a field goal
Sione Molisi (JR/Salt Lake City, UT) rushed for five yards and Hill added 29 to get to the Mayville 45-yard line. Cooper completed a 29-yard pass to Malik Adams (SR/Cedar Rapids, IA) and then Hill rushed for a 16-yard touchdown.
Keegan Handal (SO/Tomball, TX) came up big with a sack for a 16-yard loss, forcing the Comets to punt.
The Warriors started their drive with 1:56 left on the clock on the Mayville 23-yard line. Jorge Rivera (SO/Mason City, IA) rushed for nine yards and Cooper for 12. Hill recorded his fourth touchdown to put the Warriors up 28-17 to close out the first half.
Mayville State started with the ball to open the third quarter and scored a 32-yard touchdown pass to make it a four-point game.
On the first play of the second half, Hill scored his fifth rushing touchdown of the game, for 56-yards.
Keylan Jackson (JR/Minneapolis, MN) had a sack on the Comet quarterback for a loss of six yards. The Comets scored their second field goal, and the Warriors were up 35-27.
The Warriors were forced to punt but a Mayville penalty for roughing the kicker resulted in a no play and automatic first down. Taye Buchanan came up with a 60-yard rushing touchdown to close out the third quarter.
To start the fourth quarter, the Comets scored their last touchdown of the game.
Hill rushed for 17-yards and Cooper completed a pass to Bryce Jones (JR/Long Beach, CA) for 19 yards for two first downs. Cooper completed two more passes; one to Watt for 10-yards and the other to Adams for 26. Cooper reconnected with Watt for a 20-yard touchdown.
Shannen Williams (SR/Las Vegas, NV) got an interception, but the Waldorf offense was unable to get by Mayville State's defense.
Jakim Brock (JR/Stockton, CA) halted the Comets' offense with another interception. Buchanan scored the final touchdown with a 62-yard rush. The Warriors won 56-34.
"I am extremely proud of our guys. It is never easy playing Mayville on the road," Interim Head Coach Tyler Chapa said. "There was some adversity that our guys had to fight through, and our older leadership showed up. We will enjoy this one and get ready for Dickinson at home."
Hill finished the game with 187 yards on 16 attempts and five touchdowns. Buchanan went 152 yards on five attempts, averaging 30.4 yards per carry, and two touchdowns. Connor Parker went 8/8 on PAT try's. Will Stricklin (JR/San Diego, CA) had a team high of six solo tackles, and assisted on four more.
The Warriors are now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in NSAA conference play. Next up, the Warriors return to Bolstorff Field for a matchup against Dickinson State on Saturday, September 23rd at 1 pm. It is also Military and First Responder Appreciation Day.
