Warriors lose home game to Hastings
FOREST CITY, Iowa - The Waldorf football team returned home Saturday after two straight games on the road and entertained Hastings at Bolstorff Field for a GPAC contest. Hastings used some key first half returns to gain a halftime lead en route to a 43-10 win.
Hastings' first big return occurred with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Colton Marsh received a Waldorf punt from his own 27-yard line. He eluded the front rush of the Warriors special teams unit and raced down the field for a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown. That gave Hastings a 13-0 lead. Early in the second quarter, a long Hastings interception return set them up for another touchdown. Jake Lambert incepted a Louis Williams pass and sprinted 50 yards to the Waldorf 15-yard line. On the next play, Cassius Campbell hit Jake Bergen for a score that made it 20-0. Bergen caught three passes on the day for Hastings and all went for touchdowns.
Late in the first half, Waldorf got possession from their own 41 with 1:08 left. Williams used his arm and legs to drive the Warriors down to the 3-yard line. After a couple of incompletions, Connor Parker kicked a 20-yard field goal on the final play of the half that cut Hastings' lead to 20-3.
Hastings scored quickly on their first drive of the second half. On a 3rd-and-3 from their own 45, quarterback Carson Kudlacek called his own number and rushed 55 yards for a touchdown. On Waldorf's next possession, from their own 3-yard line, a bobbled snap resulted in a sack in the end zone for a Hastings safety. That gave Hastings a 29-3 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Waldorf wide receiver Kadin Abele put on an impressive display of pass catching. Starting from their own 25, Williams lofted a pass down the left sideline that Abele grasped with one hand for a 30-yard gain. Williams connected with Abele on the next play for 11 yards. Three plays later, Abele outstretched defenders to haul in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Williams.
Abele caught five passes for 81 yards. Williams threw for 190 yards while rushing for 84 more. Luke Beyer had an impressive day for the Warriors with 10 tackles. Josh Mitchell returned an interception 52 yards.
