Waldorf Women’s Wrestling Finishes 4th in the GPAC Championships, Serrano-Rios and Bruno Qualify for Nationals
CRETE, Neb. – The Warrior Women's Wrestlers traveled to the GPAC Championships hosted by Doane University on Saturday. The team finished in 4th place with 102.0 points with four wrestlers finishing in the top 3 in their weight classes.
At 103, Alanis Serrano-Rios received a bye to send her to the semifinals where she won by decision over Midland's Zoe Omura. In the 1st place match, Doane's Karina Vang won over Serrano-Rios by tech fall at 2:03. In the 2nd place match, she won by no contest over Midland's Omura, earning Serrano-Rios 2nd place and 12 team points.
At 110, Edyn Hartman received a bye for her first match and won her second by fall at 4:03 over Midland's Destiny Castillo. In the 1st place match, she fell to Doane's Jaden Breeden at 1:56. Hartman finished in 2nd place and scored 14 team points.
At 117, Olivia Maxey-Ladson lost her first match by fall and received a bye in her second match. She won by decision over Waldorf's Jade Hackett, and for the 3rd place match, she fell to Doane's Julia Breeden by fall, finishing in 4th place and scoring 8 team points.
Also at 117, Jade Hackett won her first match by fall at 0:15 over Dakota Wesleyan's Ashden Welty. In her next matches, she fell to Doane's Mora Peterson and lost by decision to Waldorf's Maxey-Ladson. She won by fall in the 5th place match at 2:15 to Dakota Wesleyan's Welty to finish in 5th place and score 11 team points.
At 124, Amanda Durrant received a bye and lost by fall to Doane's Cristelle Rodriguez. For her third match, she won by tech fall, and in her last match, she lost by tech fall. She placed 4th and scored 9 team points.
At 131, Abigail Atibagos placed 6th and scored 4 team points.
At 138, Neve Barragan received a bye and fell to Hastings' Tabitha Wood in her second match. Next, she won by fall at 0:51 over Morningside's Josie Biffar, and in her last match, she won by fall at 4:27 over Midland's Eny Bravo. She won 3rd place and score 13.5 team points.
Also at 138, Izzy Urban received a bye, and in her second and third matches, she lost by fall to Hastings' Reagen Gallaway and Midland's Bravo. She won the 5th place match by fall over Morningside's Biffar and scored 8 team points.
At 160, in her first match, Renee Miguel fell to Hastings' Brooke Schilke. She received a bye and then fell to Midland's Ja'nya Banks. For 5th place, Migel won by forfeit over Hastings' Schilke, scoring 8 points for her team.
At 207, Skyler Bruno won by fall at 2:14 over Dakota Wesleyan's Kaitlin Gay. She then fell to Doane's Hailey Romero and received a bye for her third match. She won by fall at 2:16 over Morningside's Nevaeh Host, sending her to the 2nd place match where she fell to Hastings' Taylor Rickley. She finished in 3rd place and scored 14.5 team points.
Coach Tyreece Gilder said, "Some highs and lows this weekend. We have to be able to eliminate more of those lows if we're going to make some noise. We're on the right track though! Tons of fight this weekend from the gals! Time to get our qualifers ready for the big show."
With her 2nd place finish, Alanis Serrano-Rios earned an automatic qualification for nationals. Skyler Bruno will also wrestle at nationals with an at-large allocation. The 3rd Annual Women's Wrestling National Championship takes place on March 14 and 15 in the Park City Arena in Wichita, Kansas.
