Warriors drop season opener at Mount Mercy
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Waldorf men's basketball team opened their 2024-25 season Thursday in Cedar Rapids for a game at Mount Mercy. The Mustangs broke open a tight game at the half and defeated the Warriors, 74-55.
Neither team shot well in the first half, both shooting under 30 percent. Waldorf's Ugo Ejiofor was one player though who did shoot well. He was 4-for-6 from the floor and scored 10 points in the opening 20 minutes. The rest of the Warriors though scored only 10 points as Waldorf trailed 26-20 at the half.
The shooting did improve for both teams in the second half. One big difference was in 3-point shooting. Mount Mercy shot 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) from beyond the arc while Waldorf was just 1-for-12 (8.3 percent). Mount Mercy extended their halftime to 10 within two minutes of the second half. Waldorf cut the deficit to 4 at 40-36 following a Krys Watley jump shot with 10:54 remaining. Waldorf kept the Mustangs in their sites until Mount Mercy brought their lead back to double digits with 5:48 left. They would go on to extend the lead throughout the closing minutes.
Ejiofor led Waldorf with 17 points and eight rebounds. Nick Graves added 12 points.
Waldorf (0-1) next plays Saturday at Martin Luther in New Ulm, Minn.
