Men's Soccer Win Big at Home 16-2
FOREST CITY, IA – The Waldorf men's soccer team returned to their home field at Bolstorff Field for a non-conference game against Union College (NE). In a high scoring game with two-athletes getting hat tricks, Waldorf won 16-2.
"We reacted well with a quick turnaround and early morning from Saturday's game and one player was on fire this whole weekend; and that is Antonio Coutinho, our senior from Libson, Portugal," first year Head Coach Thomas Goodman stated. "Today he scored six and had four assists and this whole weekend he was the energy that helped the team keep motivated and today controlled the midfield."
At the fourth-minute mark, Waldorf took the lead with a goal by Nickolas Linares (FR/Ontario, Canada), assisted by Maku Ene (JR/Lancaster, CA). Waldorf continued their offensive efforts with shots from Antonio Coutinho (SR/Libson, Portugal) and Ene but were saved by Union College's goalkeeper.
Ene extended Waldorf's lead with a goal at the 18th minute, making it 2-0. Waldorf saw more opportunities with shots on goal that were saved.
Coutinho added another goal to give Waldorf a 3-0 lead. Waldorf's relentless offense continued with Coutinho scoring again at the 20th minute, bringing the score 4-0.
Union College managed to get on the scoreboard at the 24th minute.
At 25:26, Lucas Berte (SR/Joinville, Brazil) had a corner kick that led to several shots, but the Union goalkeeper made some impressive saves.
Ansumana Sheriff (FR/Ankeny, IA) scored Waldorf's fifth goal, assisted by Coutinho.
With 10 minutes left in the half, Coutinho scored his third goal of the game off of a penalty kick.
Union scored their second goal to close out the first half.
Lucas Hanchar (FR/Ontario, Canada) opened the second half by scoring two quick goals, one assisted by Coutinho and the other by Ene.
Coutinho kept his momentum by scoring two more goals within 30 seconds, both goals were assisted by Berte, moving the score 10-2. Ene managed to score his second goal of the game at the 64th minute, Mohamed Yokie (SR/Kenema, Sierra Leone) was credited on the assist.
Waldorf's Hanchar scored his third goal at the 75th minute, assisted by Linares. Two more goals for Waldorf game from Sheriff, unassisted, and Flavio Bravo (SO/Lima, Peru), assisted by Coutinho to bring the score 14-2.
With three minutes remaining, Garrett McBee (SO/Lake Wales, FL) scored the 15th goal, which was assisted by Coutinho, and the final goal came by Coutinho, assisted by Bravo. Waldorf won 16-2.
After a standpoint performance from Waldorf, Coutinho broke the record for most points in a game with 16 (six goals and four assists) that was previously held by Daniel Pinkney in 2021.
Hanchar finished with a hat trick by scoring three goals. Sheriff and Ene each had two goals and Ene and Berte both added two assists.
Goodman added, "We are looking to get back into GPAC play this Wednesday at home, we have a lot to work on but it was nice to get that first win today."
