Warriors Secure Conference Win Against Tigers at Home
FOREST CITY, IA – The Waldorf men's soccer team was back in GPAC action for a matchup against Doane (NE) on Wednesday evening at Bolstorff Field. In an exciting battle, the Warriors won 2-1.
"What a game of soccer! I feel for the first time this season, the men gave their all for each other, we have been working hard to play as a team and not as individuals," first year Head Coach Thomas Goodman stated. "We have also been working hard on keeping our shape and pressing out of our defense on to attack with a purpose."
The opening minutes saw intense action with shots fired from both teams, but neither team was able to find the back of the net early on.
At the 21:30 mark, Nickolas Linares (FR/Ontario, Canada) scored an unassisted goal to take the lead.
The Tigers tied the game in the 42nd minute of the first half.
Lucas Berte (SR/Joinville, Brazil) saw an opportunity early in the second half for a shot on goal, but the Doane goalie saved it. AJ Villegas (SR/Yuma, AZ) made a defensive save denying a potential Tiger goal.
Maku Ene (JR/Lancaster, CA) found the net in the 79th minute, assisted by Berte, for the game-winning goal. Waldorf's defense held strong in the final minutes of the match to secure the win 2-1.
Goalkeeper Kyle Pederson (SO/Ankeny, IA) finished the game with four saves in the second half.
Goodman added, "It's great to get our first GPAC win, now we are full members, we are excited to be able to play this level of competition all season long. We have a goal to finish in the top 8 to secure our spot in playoffs. This was a big and important win for that goal."
The Warriors are now 2-5-1 overall, and 1-2 in conference play. Next up, the men's soccer team is on the road for a conference road game against Hastings on Saturday, September 23rd at 5:30 pm.
