Warriors Fall in 5 Set Thriller to Saints
LaCROSSE, WI – The Waldorf volleyball team was back in action for a tournament hosted by the Viterbo V-Hawks starting with a non-conference game against the St. Francis (Ill.) Saints on Friday evening. In a five-set thriller, the Warriors lost 2-3.
Set 1: The Warriors got off strong with a 6-4 before the Saints came back to tie the game at 11. The set was a continued back-and-forth fight until the Saints pulled out the win 25-22. Waldorf finished the set with 13 kills.
Set 2: A kill from Emily Soukup (FR/Faribault, MN) and three more from Kenzie Kidd (SR/Roscoe, IL) gave the Warriors the momentum to go up 10-4. The Warriors extended their lead to 17-9 with kills from Alicia Brandt (JR/Lakefield, MN), Sydney Kidd (FR/Roscoe, IL), and Anna Longhenry (SO/Fenton, IA). Waldorf took the second set 25-17. The Warriors finished with 12 kills and held the Saints to nine.
Set 3: The Warriors opened the set with a kill from Sydney Kidd but then trailed the rest of the set. The Saints took the set 25-17 and had an impressive 19 kills. The Warriors had a set high of 14.
Set 4: The Warriors bounced back for a must win set to force a fifth with an 8-1 start. The Saints were able to bring the game within three before the Warriors went on a 5-0 run to extend the lead 18-11. Waldorf closed out the set with a 25-19 win. The Warriors finished with 10 kills and zero errors.
Set 5: The Saints took control of the fifth set with eight kills compared to the Warriors six to win 9-15.
Kenzie Kidd finished with a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs, with one solo block and two block assists. Longhenry had a team-high of 15 kills and Sydney Kidd added 11. Emma Hovenga (SR/Forest City, IA) also recorded a double-double with 33 assists and 14 digs. Kaylee Kidd tallied 25 digs and Laina Yurs (JR/South Beloit, IL) and Juliet Karlen (JR/Janesville, WI) each had three service aces.
The Warriors have a quick turnaround with two matches tomorrow at the Viterbo V-Hawks tournament. First is a 9 am match against (RV) Rocky Mountain followed by Trinity Christian at 1 pm.
