Volleyball team hangs tough with Morningside
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Waldorf volleyball team stayed in-state for a GPAC matchup at Morningside. The Warriors took the Mustangs to a fifth set, before Morningside prevailed (25-21, 16-25, 26-24, 14-25, 15-7).
Morningside held a lead throughout most of the first set. Late in the frame, a 4-point Waldorf run tied the score at 20. Kaylin Koch ended the spurt with back-to-back kills. The Mustangs though scored five of the last six points to claim the set.
Waldorf bounced back to easily take the second set. Three straight kills from Anna Longhenry gave Waldorf a quick 4-0 lead. Another four-point spurt extended the Warriors lead to 12-4. That run ended with a Kenzie Kidd service ace. Back-to-back blocks from Longhenry and Alicia Brandt swelled the lead to double digits at 19-8. Waldorf would go on to a 25-16 set win.
Waldorf had a set point in the third set at 24-23. Morningside scored the final three points of the set to take a 2-1 match lead.
Like the second set, Waldorf bounced back to dominate the fourth, 25-14. Koch had kills in two of the final three points of the set.
Morningside scored the first three points of the fifth set and didn't look back to claim the set and the match.
Koch led Waldorf with 16 kills. Kenzie Kidd was right behind with 15. Kidd also had 18 digs to lead the team. Rachel Watson had 24 assists.
Waldorf (6-5, 0-2 in GPAC) returns home to face Briar Cliff Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The JV match begins at 6 p.m.
