Kenzie Kidd reaches milestone at William Penn Tourney
OSKALOOSA, Iowa - Waldorf senior outside hitter Kenzie Kidd became the fourth player in school history to record 1,000 career kills joining Kyra Platzek, Abby Buehler, and Courtney Palmer on the exclusive list.
Waldorf split their matches Saturday on the second day of the William Penn Tournament, defeating St. Francis (Ill.) in straight sets before losing to William Penn in five sets.
Kenzie Kidd got closer to the 1,000-career plateau in the St. Francis match. She tied for the team lead with nine kills. Jalyn Hovenga and Anna Longhenry joined Kidd with nine kills. Waldorf won the match 25-21, 25-19, 30-28. In the tight third set, Waldorf trailed 20-16. A Hovenga kill was part of a four-point spurt that tied the set at 20. It was back and forth the rest of the way. Down 28-27, kills from Kidd and Kaylin Koch gave Waldorf a 29-28 lead. A St. Francis error gave Waldorf the set and the match.
William Penn ended Waldorf's six-match win streak in the second match of the day. It was historic though as Kidd connected on her milestone 1,000th career kill. Even though the match went the full five sets, it featured a number of lopsided sets. William Penn won the first set 25-13. Waldorf countered with a 25-10 second-set win. After William Penn won the third set 25-20, Waldorf took the fourth set 25-11. The Statesmen would prevail on their home court in the fifth set, 15-9. Kidd led Waldorf with 17 kills. Longhenry added 14. Kaylee Kidd had a good defensive effort with 23 digs.
Waldorf (6-3) has their home and Great Plains Athletic Conference opener on tap Wednesday against Dakota Wesleyan. The JV match starts at 6 p.m. with the varsity match slated for 7:30 p.m.
