CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – The Waldorf women's soccer team opened their 2023 season with a road game against non-conference opponent Mount Mercy. The Warriors lost 2-3.
The Mustangs scored their first goal in the first minute of the game. Zoe Silovich (JR/Rock Springs, WY), Paige Spatorico (SR/North Tonawanda, NY), and Mikayla Smith (SR/Honolulu, HI) all had shots on goal, but were saved by the Mustangs goalie.
Mount Mercy scored their final two goals within the last two minutes of the half.
Iveth Guzman (SR/Mission, TX) scored the first goal for the Warriors in the first nine minutes of the second half and Gabby Bauman (SR/Breaux Bridge, LA) scored the second just under five minutes later.
Sydney Boyd (SR/Aiea, HI) had a last minute shot to end the game to try to tie but resulted wide left.
Samantha Linteo (SR/Napa, CA) and Lucia Serrano Blazquez (FR/Madrid, Spain) split time in goal, and each had one save.
"After getting scored on in the first minutes and being down 3-0 at half, I was worried about the moral of the team, but we grouped up and talked out some changes and scored two goals almost compiling the comeback," first-year Head Coach Thomas Goodman stated. "We left the field with a positive feeling and will regroup this week and get ready for the next one."
The Warriors will travel to play Clarke (IA) University on Sunday, September 3rd for a non-conference game at 1 pm.
