Warriors Open Season Against Sooners
ALBERT LEA, MN – The Waldorf men's D1 hockey team opened their season with a home weekend series against the University of Oklahoma Sooners. The Warriors made an exciting comeback but fell 4-3.
"We had a rough start but was able to get going as the game progressed," Head Coach Mike Heitkamp stated. "We need to start playing the game 5 on 5 and stop taking poor penalties."
The Sooners scored their first goal on a Warrior power-play. Less than one minute later, the Sooners scored again to take an early 2-0 lead after the first period.
In the second period, the Sooners carried their momentum to score three minutes in on a Warrior power-play.
Brandon McDonald (FR/Winnipeg, MB) scored the first goal for Waldorf, assisted by Luke Nemeth (FR/Ames, IA) with just under one minute remaining in the second period.
The Warriors found the back of the net again to start the third period with Jordan Adams (JR/Rocky Mountain House, AB) scoring and Devin Carney (FR/Wasilla, AK) assisting.
The Sooners scored the game winning goal on a Waldorf power-play.
McDonald scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Anthony Pileggi and Adams. The Sooners won 4-3.
Heitkamp added, "JB played well and gave us an opportunity. It was also positive that our new guys played well, and JJ and Brandon were able to get their first goals as a Warrior. We need a much more disciplined game tomorrow."
Goaltender Jordan Berschiminsky (JR/Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) finished the game with 39 saves.
The Warriors return to the ice tomorrow, September 16th at 2 pm against the Sooners.
