D1 Hockey Tabs First Win, Lindblom Earns Hat Trick
ALBERT LEA, MN – The Waldorf D1 hockey team returned to their home ice for a weekend series against the Northern Illinois University Huskies on Friday evening. The Warriors received their first win of the season, beating the Huskies 5-1. Jake Lindblom got a hat trick on the evening by scoring three goals.
"I thought the guys played well tonight," Head Coach Mike Heitkamp stated. "It was nice to see us finally score a few goals. The guys kept the game simple and got hungry around their net."
Halfway through the first period, the Warriors were first to score by Jake Lindblom (SR/Pine City, MN) finding the back of net. Jacob Sundgren (JR/Pinedale, WY) and Morgan Sweeney (SR/Hastings, MN) were credited on the assists.
The Huskies tied the game early in the second period.
At the 10th minute mark, Lindblom scored the go-ahead goal, assisted by Cale Anderson (SO/Maple Ridge, BC) and Brett Janssens (JR/Carberry, MB).
The Warriors scored a second goal in the second period from JJ Adams (JR/Rocky Mountain House, AB), assisted by Brandon McDonald (FR/Winnipeg, MB).
In the third period, the Warriors secured two more goals. The first was from Hunter Beckett (JR/Craig, CO), assisted by Sweeney. Lindblom scored his third goal, unassisted to win the game 5-1.
Waldorf goalkeeper Gaige Reimer (FR/Medicine Hat, AB) finished the game with 20 saves.
"Gage Reimer made some big saves tonight. Congratulations to him on his first collegiate win. It was nice to see Jake get the hat trick as well," Heitkamp added. "Shout out to our penalty killers too. They had to put in some work tonight."
The D1 hockey team is back tomorrow, Saturday, October 21st against the Huskies for the second game in the weekend series. Puck drop is at 2 pm.
