Waldorf D1 Hockey Ends the Season Strong with Weekend Wins

AMES, Iowa - The Waldorf D1 Hockey team traveled to Ames, Iowa to face off against the Iowa State University Cyclones in the first game of the weekend series.

On Friday, the Warriors were able to pick up a 3-2 win against the Cyclones. In the first period, Iowa State's Dylan Hender would score in the first minute. It was not long until Waldorf's Mackenzie Bolger would score to tie up the game at 1-1 with an assist by Kirill Konach. After some back and forth, Iowa State's Gabe Myers would find the net in the middle of the period taking the lead. Waldorf struck back in the final minutes of the first period with another game tying goal from the Warriors by Dominic Toews with an assist by Zak Molstad. In the second period, both teams would be held scoreless, still tied 2-2. In the third period, Waldorf's Bolger would seal the deal for the Warriors after scoring his second of the night with 51 seconds left in the final period with a first assist by Konach, his second of the game, and a second assist by Jeremiah Lebsack. The Warriors Goalkeeper Vaughn Hoebeche had a shut out in the final two periods and a total of 48 saves on the night. 

On Saturday, the Warriors would host the Cyclones in Albert Lea, Minnesota for the second game of the weekend. Waldorf started off strong in the first period. Waldorf's Gunner Vignaroli scored the first goal of the night in the first 6 minutes of the game with a first assist by Luke Nemeth and a second assist by Spencer Clark. Iowa State's John Kovarik struck back in the next 40 seconds to tie the game 1-1. The Warriors scored back-to-back goals in the next minutes. Waldorf's Audun Caple in the 8th minute and Bolger in the 10th with a first assist by Anthony Pileggi and a second assist by Molstad. Iowa State's Kovarik would again strike back shortly after going down 3-1, shooting a long shot to score and cut the lead down to 3-2 in the first ten minutes of the game. Both teams would not score the rest of the period. In the second period, Waldorf's Caple would score the only goal of the period for the Warriors, his second of the night, assisted by Bolger to increase the lead in the 13th minute. Iowa State's Jacob Schuldt scored within the final four minutes of the period, cutting the lead down and scoring their only goal of the period, making it a 4-3 game. The Warriors would dominate the third period, outscoring the Cyclones 3-1. Waldorf's Dominic Towes would score in the 3rd minute with a first assist from Gunner Vignaroli and a second assist from Dylan Carlson. Waldorf's Bolger would score in the 12th minute with a first assist from Caple and a second assist from Molstad. The last goal of the night for the Warriors was scored by Zack Bender, his first of the season, with a first assist form JJ Adams and a second assist from Jeremiah Lebsack, increasing the Warrior lead to 7-3. Iowa State's Brady Kearns would score the final goal of the night for the Cyclones in the 19th minute to make it a 7-4 game. Warriors would walk away with both wins in the weekend series. The Warriors Goalkeeper Vaughn Hoebeche would have 31 saves on the night, totaling 79 saves on the weekend.  

The Warriors end the season with a 6-20 record overall and 6-16 in the conference.
