Warriors Compete against Trojans
CLARION, Iowa – The Waldorf softball team closed out their home weekend series against Dakota State. The Warriors finished the day with a split, winning game one 8-6 and dropping game two 9-13.
The Trojans started the first game with two runs. Paige Pierson (SO/Cambridge, IA) scored the first run for the Warriors in the bottom of the 1st inning from a sacrifice fly out from Kaela Eslinger (JR/Macksburg, IA).
Dakota State extended their lead 1-4 in the 2nd inning.
Pierson scored the second run from the Warriors followed by Kassidy Elyea (JR/Sioux Falls, SD) getting a two-run RBI double to tie the game 4-4.
In the top of the 4th inning, the Trojans added two runs to retake the lead. Brooke Hickey (SO/Adel, IA) responded with a two-run RBI double getting Pierson and Maddie Dalke (JR/Medford, OR) to tie the game. Hickey then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
To close out the first game, Gabby Bierly (FR/Eagan, MN) scored on a throwing error from the Trojans to win 8-6.
Pierson finished the game with four at bats, four hits, and three runs.
The Trojans started off strong for game two by scoring six runs in the first inning and added another run in the 2nd.
The Warriors responded well in the bottom of the 2nd by adding six runs of their own. Dalke and Bierly scored off of a throwing Trojan error. Kyleigh Morris (JR, Papillion, NE) scored the third run. Hickey got a two-run homerun and Eslinger scored the sixth run with a homer to left field.
The Trojans extended their lead to 11 in the 3rd and 4th inning.
Alex Mathers (SR/Greene, IA) scored a homerun in the bottom of the 5th inning.
Dakota State added another run in the 6th and Hickey got a two-run homerun to make the score 9-12. The Trojans scored their final run on a wild pitch to win 9-13.
Pierson finished the game with four at bats and four hits, and Mathers went 2-2.
Next up for the Warriors is a non-conference home doubleheader against William Penn on Tuesday, March 28th starting at 2 p.m.
