Warriors Softball Edged in Extras by Flames

SIOUX CENTER, IA – The Warriors saw their late game slip away Saturday afternoon. Leading for the majority of the game, Waldorf University saw the College of Saint Mary push across the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth for a 4-3 final. Undefeated Northwestern College defeated Waldorf, 11-0 in five innings, in the first game of the day.
Waldorf put runners on base three times in the first four innings with two reaching scoring position, but it could not drive any home. Northwestern scored in each of the first four frames for the run-rule win to go to 14-0.
Haley Ehlert lined a single to right field and gave the Warriors the immediate 1-0 lead over the Flames. Brooke Hickey put Waldorf ahead both 2-0 on a fourth-inning single and 3-1 when she had a RBI fielder's choice in the sixth. College of Saint Mary registered back-to-back hits with a double and single to tie the game at 3-3 in the home sixth. The Warriors had both Kaela Eslinger and Maddle Dalke single in the seventh with two outs, but they couldn't get the go ahead hit. After Waldorf went down in order in the top of the eighth, CSM sacrificed the runner placed on second to third before a single on its next hitter plated the winning run.
On the day, Waldorf was led by Eslinger's double and two hits. Gabby Bierly singled once in the opener and two more times in the second game with a run. Ehlert doubled in the first game and singled two times with her RBI in game two. Paige Pierson doubled and singled in the late contest. Hickey drove in two with one hit, while McKenna Mentink, Dalke, Madison Clark and Kyleigh Morris each had one hit.
Waldorf is now off until it travels to Tucson, Ariz., for the Tucson Invitational. It opens the event with two games on Monday, March 4, with a 10 a.m. CST first pitch against St. Francis (Ill.) and a contest against Madonna University to follow at 12 p.m.
