Softball Opens Conference Play with Split Against Dakota State

CLARION, Iowa – The Waldorf softball team opened NSAA conference play for a four-game weekend series against Dakota State at the Clarion High School softball field. The Warriors finished the day with a split, losing game one 7-16 and then winning game two 9-5.
The Trojans scored three runs to start the game. Kaela Eslinger (JR/Macksburg, IA) started things off in the bottom of the 1st with an RBI single getting Brooke Hickey (SO/Adel, IA) to score and Paige Pierson (SO/Cambridge, IA) scored on a Trojan throwing error. Kassidy Eylea (JR/Sioux Falls, SD) closed out the inning with a double to right field allowing Kyleigh Morris (JR/Papillion, NE) and Eslinger to take the lead 4-3.
In the 3rd inning, Eslinger scored her second run by a fielder's choice RBI from Maddie Dalke (JR/Medford, OR).
The Trojans scored five runs in the fourth inning to take and then keep the lead. Hickey ended the 4th inning with a homerun.
Dakota State went on to score eight runs and Eslinger scored the final run for the Warriors. The Trojans won 7-16.
Eslinger led the Warriors with three hits and three runs on four at bats.
For game two, the Trojans started the game with a run before the Warriors went on to score five.
Eslinger got an RBI single with Pierson tying the game. McKenna Mentink (SR/Mason City, IA) continued with an RBI and Eslinger score the go-ahead run. Gabby Bierly (FR/Eagan, MN) got a two run RBI single getting Annah Sheffield (JR/Sheffield, AL) and Elyea to score. Emily Muro (SR/Stanton, CA) followed with an RBI single and Bierly scored.
The Trojans tied the from scoring in each inning, through the 4th.
The Warriors had strong defense with many clutch outs, preventing the Trojans from scoring. Eslinger got a sacrifice fly out RBI in the bottom of the 6th inning getting Muro to score.
Elyea got a three-run homerun to take the win 9-5.
Mentink pitched all seven innings with only one walk.
The Warriors will return to Clarion High School to finish out the series against the Trojans tomorrow, March 25th starting at 1 p.m.
