Waldorf Softball Splits at Home against Mayville State
FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Waldorf softball team had their first home doubleheader for a conference matchup against Mayville State. The Warriors finished with a split, losing the first 3-9 and winning game two 5-4.
In the first games, the Comets took control by scoring nine runs in five of the seven innings.
Gabby Bierly (FR/Eagan, MN) started some momentum for the Warriors with an RBI single allowing Emily Muro (SR/Stanton, CA) to score the first run. McKenna Mentink (SR/Mason City, IA) followed with an RBI double and Bierly scoring. Mentink got the final run from a ground out by Annah Sheffield (JR/Sheffield, AL).
Mentink pitched six innings and finished with five strikeouts and two walks.
For game two, the Warriors got an early lead with Muro and Kassidy Elyea (JR/Sioux Falls, SD) scoring back-to-back runs unearned in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Kaela Eslinger (FR/Bellmead, TX) got a homerun in the 3rd inning to extend the lead 3-0.
The Comets responded in the 4th inning by scoring on a sacrifice fly out. In the bottom of the inning, Paige Pierson (SO/Cambridge, IA) got an RBI single allowing Kyleigh Morris (JR/Papillion, NE) to score, and Brooke Hickey (SO/Adel, IA) followed with another RBI single getting Pierson to score the final run.
The Comets went on to add a run in the next three innings, but the Warriors won 5-4.
Alex Mathers started pitching and finished with two strikeouts. Dalke closed the game and secured the win with three strikeouts and zero walks.
The Warriors will be back tomorrow to finish out the series against the Comets starting at 1 p.m.
