Waldorf Softball Sweeps Iowa Wesleyan At Home

FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Waldorf softball team was back in action on their home field for a non-conference doubleheader against the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers. The Warriors won both games 8-7 and 10-6 with Brooke Hickey scoring a homerun in each game.
Emily Muro (SR/Stanton, CA) got things started for the Warriors with an RBI double getting Gabby Bierly (FR/Eagan, MN) to score the first run in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
The Tigers took the lead in the top of the 3rd with a two-run homerun.
In the bottom of the 4th, Muro got her second RBI with a single to center field with Kyleigh Morris (JR/Papillion, NE) tying the game at 2-2.
Brooke Hickey (SO/Adel, IA) came up with an RBI double allowing Sydney Boyd (SR/Aiea, HI) to score the go-ahead run and Kaela Eslinger (JR/Macksburg, IA) followed up with a two-run homerun to extend their lead in the 5th inning.
In the 6th inning, Hickey got her first homerun with Alyssa Banda (FR/Bellmead, TX) and Muro scoring to go up 8-2.
The Tigers started the 7th inning with an RBI single and then hit a grand slam. The Warrior defense and pitching was able to stop the Tigers momentum to win the game 8-7.
McKenna Mentink (SR/Mason City, IA) was on the mound for the Warriors and pitched all seven innings. Mentink finished with six strikeouts. The Warriors had 12 hits with Hickey, Kassidy Elyea (JR/Sioux Falls, SD), Bierly, and Muro all having two hits.
For game two, the Tigers started the game with an RBI single. In the bottom of the 1st, Annah Sheffield (JR/Sheffield, AL) got an RBI single with Muro scoring and Hickey scored on a Tiger throwing error to take the lead 2-1.
Muro scored her second run of the game in the 3rd inning off of an RBI by Eslinger.
The Tigers had a big 4th inning by scoring fours to take the lead 3-5.
Hickey responded with her second homerun of the day to tie the game in the bottom of the 4th.
The Warriors continued their momentum in the 6th inning with four back-to-back RBI singles to retake the lead 10-5.
In the top of the 7th, the Tigers got bases loaded and scored off of a walk RBI. The Warrior defense and pitching was able to secure the win and keep the Tigers from scoring. The Warriors won 10-6.
Alex Mathers (SR/Greene, IA) started pitching the first three innings for the Warriors and finished with two strikeouts and no walks. Alyssa Oswald (JR/Wasilla, AK) got the win and Paige Pierson (SO/Cambridge, IA) came up with the save. Sheffield led the offense with four hits and Hickey followed with three.
Next up for the softball team is another non-conference doubleheader tomorrow against Graceland University starting at 2 p.m.
