Waldorf's season comes to an end; eliminated from NSAAs
DICKINSON, N.D. - After defeating Dakota State in the first game Saturday of the NSAA Tournament, the Waldorf softball team fell to Valley City State late Saturday. The loss eliminated Waldorf from the tournament and put an end to their season.
In the tournament's first game Saturday, Waldorf faced Dakota State in their first elimination game of the day. Neither team scored through the first two innings. Dakota State broke through with two in the top of the third on a two-run home run. The Warriors answered in their half of the third. Gabby Bierly started a rally with a one-out double down the left field line. Brooke Hickey drew a walk. Kaela Eslinger countered Dakota State's home run with one of her own. This one gave Waldorf the lead at 3-2. Maddie Dalke was stellar in the circle. Over the final four innings, Dalke allowed only two Dakota State hits. She retired the Trojans in order in the seventh to preserve Waldorf's 3-2 win.
The win advanced them to another elimination game against Valley City State. Dalke was in the circle again for Waldorf. She held the Vikings scoreless in the first inning. VCSU broke through in the second. A bases-clearing double gave the Vikings a 3-0 lead. VCSU added three more in the fourth and put an early ending to the game with two in the fifth to give the game its final score of 8-0.
The loss ends Waldorf's season with a 10-29 overall record and 8-15 mark in NSAA play.
