Warriors Lead in Both Softball Games, Fall Short in Results
SIOUX CENTER, IA – The Warriors enjoyed being ahead both Friday contests. Waldorf University led in both softball games, but fell short in the end results against Morningside College, 8-6, and Dordt University, 12-2 in five innings.
Waldorf (0-4) saw its first four second-inning hitters reach base and plated three runs with RBI hits from both Kyleigh Morris and Timber Oakes to open a 4-1 advantage. The Mustangs won the next 4.5 innings and held an 8-4 lead after six frames. The Warriors battled in the final at bat where Brooke Hickey led off with a single, before she trotted around the rest of the bases when Kassidy Elyea belted a two-run homer to left center. It would be the final scores as the Morningside retired the next two hitters to finish the contest.
Trailing 1-0 after a half inning, the Warriors went in front in the home first when both Oakes and Haley Ehlert singled home a runner apiece for a 2-1 lead. The Defenders, though, tied the game at 2-2 in the second before they put three and then seven scores over the third and fourth innings to complete the shortened contest.
At the plate, Waldorf saw both Hickey and Morris total three hits each of the team's 15 combined total of the two games. Hickey was the top opener performer going 3 for 4 with two runs and a run-scoring double and added a run and a walk late. Morris registered hits in both trips to the plate against Dordt after she had a 1 for 3 first game with a run and one RBI.
Oakes accounted for a single in each game, which both drove a teammate home. Kaela Eslinger added a single in both games. Elyea powered her first home run of the season, a two-run variety. Gabby Bierly, Marissa Boege, Haley Ehlert and Maddie Dalke rounded out the offense with one single apiece.
Game 1
After two outs to start the game, Hickey doubled to right center and moved to third on Eslinger's single before she ran home on a Mustang error, 1-0. Tied at 1-1 in the second, Mentink and Ehlert walked before Boege's single loaded the bags. Morris lined a hit to left to take the lead at 2-1. Following the first out, Oakes singled in the second run and Hickey brought in the third on a ground out for a 4-1 margin.
Down 4-3 in the fourth, Morningside took advantage of a pair of Waldorf miscues as part of a four-run spurt for its 7-4 lead. The Mustangs added one final tally in the sixth before the Warriors charge in the seventh.
Game 2
Tied at 2-2 after an inning-and-a half, Waldorf threatened to retake the lead when Morris led off with a single and ran around to third on Eslinger's double. Dordt retired the next two hitters to keep the score deadlocked.
Waldorf also threatened for more runs in the third when Dalke doubled and Morris led off the fourth with a single.
Waldorf will return to action to test its mettle against both Northwestern (10 a.m.) and the College of Saint Mary (Neb.) (12 p.m.) on Saturday (Feb. 24).
