FOREST CITY, Iowa - Waldorf entertained NSAA-leading Bellevue Saturday for a doubleheader at Alford Buckley Field. The Warriors played tough against the Bruins, but Bellevue came away with two road wins.
In the opener, Waldorf pitcher Maddie Dalke allowed only one base runner over the first two innings. Bellevue finally cracked through in the third with a leadoff home run from Myla Beckstrom. Waldorf had trouble getting runners on base against Bellevue starting pitcher Katie Cunningham. Waldorf finally reached base with a lead-off bunt single by Gabby Bierly in the fourth. The Warriors added another base runner in the frame, but couldn't get across a run. Waldorf fell behind 2-0 before getting on the scoreboard in the sixth. Bierly and Brooke Hickey collected one-out singles. Bierly would come across on a throwing error to cut the deficit to 2-1. Waldorf had a chance to win it in the seventh. Kyleigh Morris laced a one-out triple down the right field line. Dalke was then hit by a pitch. Marissa Boege pinch ran for Dalke and stole second to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Cory Carrillo come in relief for Bellevue and struck out the final two Waldorf batters to preserve the Bruins 2-1 win. Dalke pitched all seven innings and collected five strikeouts.
Waldorf scored first in the second game Saturday. In the bottom of the first, Hickey drew a one-out walk. Kaela Eslinger followed with a single to left. With two outs, a Madison Clark grounder got passed the Bellevue second baseman allowing Hickey to come around to score. Bellevue countered with two runs in the second and took that 2-1 lead into the fifth. There they added three runs to take command and went on to take te second game, 6-1.
The same two teams return to Forest City tomorrow for another doubleheader starting at noon.
