Women's Basketball Opens Season at College of Saint Mary

OMAHA, NE – The Waldorf women's basketball team opened their season at the College of Saint Mary tournament on Friday evening. The Warriors played the host school and in an exciting game, the Warriors fell short, losing 63-67.
"We battled and gave ourselves chances to win the game," Head Coach Shawn Chaffin stated. "But we didn't shoot well enough to win down the stretch."
In the first quarter, Edosa Ogbemudia (SO/East Bethel, MN) tied the game at 11-11. The Flames retook the lead with a jump shot. Deaira Keaton (JR/Minneola, FL) responded with a go-ahead three. Waldorf's defense held College of Saint Mary from scoring again in the quarter and the Warriors were up 20-13.
The Flames responded by outscoring the Warriors in the second quarter 9-16. Brooke Dial (FR/Dallas, TX) made a jump shot to extend the lead at 24-21 with five minutes left in the half. The Flames took the lead at 26-27 before Lizzie Garza (SR/Brownsville, TX) drained a three. The half ended with a 29-29 tie.
In the third quarter, the Warriors had their highest scoring quarter with 24 points. Back-to-back layups from Dial and Camryn McQuery (JR/Waseca, MN) made it a 10-point lead. The Warriors were up 53-47 at the end of the quarter.
The Flames took the lead in the fourth quarter with a pair of made free throws at 53-54. Alyah Abrahamson (SO/Browersville, MN) tied the game back at 59 with a pair of made three throws of her own. The Warriors trailed by one from two points by Garza, but the Flames finished the game with a 63-67 win.
Chaffin added, "overall, we showed great improvement over last year. This team we played tonight beat us handily last season."
Ogbemudia finished the game with a team-high of 14 points. Garza added 13 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Dial contributed with 11 points and six rebounds off the bench. Sandra Christian (SR/Gainesville, TX) and Fatou Barry (JR/Gwinnett, GA) each had four assists.
The women's basketball team is back tomorrow, October 28th for a second game at the CSM Tournament against Haskell at 4 pm.
