Warriors fall to Graceland in season opener
FOREST CITY, Iowa - The Waldorf women's basketball team fought back to take a second half on Graceland in the season-opening game Saturday at Hanson Fieldhouse, but Graceland regained the lead and ran away with a 69-58 win over Waldorf.
Waldorf fell behind 20-8 after the first quarter. They started chipping away at Graceland's lead late in the second quarter. Brooke Dial and Camryn McQuery had back-to-back baskets to pull Waldorf within 33-24 at halftime.
The Warriors continued their momentum in the second half. Myia Ruzek started the half with a pair of baskets to make it 33-28. Brooke Dial added a 3 to make it 33-31. Another Dial 3 tied the score at 35. A pair of Edosa Ogbemudia free throws gave Waldorf their first lead at 37-36 with 5:00 left in the third quarter. Graceland countered through with a 9-0 run to take a 45-37 lead. They would take a 46-40 lead into the final quarter.
The Yellowjackets scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to get their lead back up to double digits at 53-40. They would maintain that edge throughout the rest of the game on their way to the 11-point win.
Dial had a double-double effort in the season debut with 27 points and 12 rebounds. She also added two blocks and two steals. Alaja Jones also grabbed 12 rebounds. Ruzek added 10 to go along with three assists.
Waldorf (0-1) returns to the home court November 6 against Clarke.
