Warriors Defeated by Cougars in Non-Conference Tilt
MORRIS, MN – The Waldorf women's basketball team was back in action for a road game against the NCAA Division III Minnesota-Morris Cougars on Monday evening. After a close first half, the Warriors were unable to keep up offensively and suffered a 71-55 defeat.
"Disappointed with our performance tonight," stated Head Coach Shawn Chaffin. "Our offense is really struggling to score right now, which is putting a ton of pressure on our defense."
1st Quarter: Sandra Christian (SR/Gainesville, TX) started the momentum off with back-to-back 3-pointers and Camryn McQuery (JR/Waseca, MN) added two points for an 8-5 lead. Christian added her third three of the quarter. Lindsay Field (SR/Eyota, MN) went 2-2 from the free throw line and Edosa Ogbemudia (SO/East Bethel, MN) added a layup to be up 15-13 at the end of the first.
2nd Quarter: The Cougars took the lead at 21-17 with five minutes left in the half. Fatou Barry (JR/Gwinnett, GA) forced a Cougar turnover with a steal. On that possession, Ogbemudia made a layup. Lizzie Garza (SR/Brownsville, TX) added a three-pointer and Brooke Dial (FR/Dallas, TX) added a made free-throw and a layup to close out the quarter. The Cougars were up 27-25.
3rd Quarter: Ogbemudia created a three-point play with a made layup and free-throw to be down by five at 33-28. After a Dial 3-pointer, the Cougars went up 38-31. Dial made a second three-pointer and Garza added two free-throws to make it a three-point game. The Cougars went on a 12-1 run to be up 51-37.
4th Quarter: Barry and Christian both went 2-2 from the three-throw line. The Cougars were up 68-47 over the Warriors. Barry and Dial closed out the points for Waldorf and Minnesota-Morris took the win 77-51.
Chaffin added, "Tip of the cap to Morris for playing really well tonight. Hopefully this is a wakeup call for us."
Dial finished with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, with 2 steals, and 1 block. Christian added 11 points, Garza had 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists, Ogbemudia tallied 7 points and 6 rebounds, and Barry had 4 steals and 2 assists.
Next up for the women's basketball team is the Hope International Tournament in Fullerton, California. The Warriors will have two games. The first game is on Monday, December 18th against Life Pacific and the second on Tuesday, December 19th against Hope International.
