Blue Hawks Post Big Third Period, Holds off Warriors Strong Finish

DICKINSON, ND – The Warriors pushed hard in the final minutes, but it was not enough. Dickinson State busted out of the half and posted a big third quarter, before it held off the hard-charging Waldorf University women's basketball team, 60-44, Friday evening.
Trailing by only a two at intermission, Waldorf (6-16/1-8 North Star Athletic Association) had the momentum after scoring the final four points of the second frame. Host Dickinson State (7-16/2-7 NSAA) proved to have different plans as it rushed out and put together a 12-0 run in the first 2:58 to change the contest and a 36-22 tally. A Brooke Dial free throw only 11 seconds later turned out to be the closest the Warriors were able to get over the final 16:51 at 36-23. Waldorf did make a furious comeback attempt in the final 3:38 with what would be the final 10 points of the contest, but the deficit was too much.
Dial was the lone double-digit Waldorf scorer at 11 points with eight coming in the opening frame. Lindsey Field added six points, two rebounds and two assists, while Sandra Christian downed a pair of treys for her own six points. Lizzie Garza was the third six-point player, while both Alyah Abrahamson and Camryn McQuery, who had four boards, chipped in four points.
Dickinson State saw Katherine Fox record 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists to led the win. The Blue Hawks also won the battle on the glass, 43-27.
After Dial netted the game's opening two points, the Blue Hawks put up the next eight points. Dial, though, led the visitors with six more of the Waldorf 12-0 run in the final 6:18 of the opening period for a 14-8 advantage.
Dickinson State answered a Christian 3-pointer with the next nine points for a lead it never gave up over the final 23:35 at 20-17. Leading 24-18, the Blue Hawks saw its lead dwindle to only two, 24-22, after the Warriors netted the final four.
Waldorf will complete its weekend road trip when it travels over to Valley City State (ND) for a Saturday afternoon (Feb. 10) matchup starting at 3:00 p.m.
