Women's Basketball Take On Life Pacific at HIU Royals Winter Tournament
FULLERTON, CA – The Waldorf women's basketball team competed in the first day of the Hope International Royals Winter Basketball Tournament on Monday evening against the Life Pacific Warriors. Waldorf was defeated by Life Pacific 82-60.
"We ran into a very hot shooting Life Pacific team tonight," stated head Coach Shawn Chaffin. "We had stretches where we played really well but we had a really tough 3rd quarter."
1st Quarter: Lizzie Garza (SR/Brownsville, TX) and Sandra Christian (SR/Gainesville, TX) scored back-to-back three-pointers for Waldorf. Garza added a second three to bring the game within one point at 13-14. Brooke Dial (FR/Dallas, TX) got fouled on a made layup and turned that into a three-point play to tie the game at 16. Life Pacific was up at the end of the quarter 19-18.
2nd Quarter: Life Pacific extended their lead to 26-20. Garza scored six straight points and Dial added a three-pointer to close out the second quarter. Waldorf was down by eight, 39-31.
3rd Quarter: Lindsay Field (SR/Eyota, MN) and Camryn McQuery (JR/Waseca, MN) scored back-to-back jump shots for Waldorf before Life Pacific went on a 13-0 run. Sophia Laurel (FR/Santa Maria, CA) stopped the run with a layup and then added two free-throws. Life Pacific was up 67-41.
4th Quarter: McQuery and Alyah Abrahamson (SO/Browersville, MN) added four points for Waldorf. Fatou Barry (JR/Gwinnett, GA) drained a three and Deaira Keaton (JR/Minneola, FL) ended the quarter with five straight points. Waldorf lost 82-60.
Chaffin added, "Looking forward to another opportunity tomorrow against a strong Hope International team that's been in the National Tournament the past two seasons and has already defeated an NCAA Division I program."
Garza finished with 13 points, going 2-3 from three-point, and added 5 rebounds. Dial had 9 points and 4 rebounds, Christian tallied 7 points and 4 rebounds. Edosa Ogbemudia, McQuery, and Laurel each had 6 points.
The women's basketball team will be back tomorrow, December 19th for a game against the host school, Hope International. Tip-off is at 3 pm.
