CLARION, Iowa – The Waldorf baseball team opened NSAA conference play with a four game series against Dakota State at Clarion High School due to home field conditions. Two of the four games went to 10 innings.
For the first game, the Trojans took an early lead 0-2 to start the game.
The Warriors tied the game in the 2nd inning with Robert Gurney (FR/Campbell River, BC) getting an RBI single allowing Ryan Webster (SO/Las Vegas, NV) scoring the first run. Anthony Hibl (JR/Sharon, WI) singled to center field and Nathan Westfield (SO/Indian Harbor Beach, FL) scored an unearned run on an error.
In the 3rd inning, Damien Sanchez (JR/Riverside, CA) score the go-ahead run, unearned and Zach Meyer (JR/Gilbert, AZ) got an RBI single bringing Thomas Capllonch (SR/Kailua, HI) to home plate to take the lead, 2-4.
The Trojans scored four runs in the top of the 4th inning, going up 4-6. Davis Churchman (SR/Ankeny, IA) scored off of a sacrifice fly out from Capllonch in the 5th inning.
Dakota State extended their lead in the 6th inning with three runs.
Capllonch opened the 8th inning with a homerun and Gurney got an RBI single to get Meyer to score.
The Trojans went up by four in the top of the 9th inning.
The Warriors tied the game 11-11 in the bottom of the 9th. Churchman scored on a passed ball, Capllonch scored on a sacrifice fly out from Atticus Smith (SO/Kent, WA) and Webster came up big with a two-run homer.
Dakota State won the game in the top of the 10th inning.
Ryan Meyer (JR/Gilbert, AZ) pitched four innings and had five strikeouts.
In the second game, the Trojans limited the Warriors to five hits compared to Dakota State's 16.
Through 2.5 innings, the Trojans had a 0-3 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, Sanchez got a two-run homer to give the Warriors some momentum. Webster reached first on an error which got Z. Meyer and Capllonch to take the lead 4-3.
The Trojans took control over the remainder of the game by scoring 15 runs and winning 4-18. Marc Luna (SR/Alvin, TX) pitched four innings with a team high of six strikeouts and two walks.
The third game went to 10 innings, with the Trojans winning 4-5.
Dakota State took a 0-2 lead in the 1st and 3rd inning. Hibl scored in the bottom of the 3rd from a sacrifice fly out from Capllonch. Juan Jorge (JR/Bronx, NY) tied the game at 2-2 from Luis Rivera's (JR/Panama City, Panama) RBI single.
The Trojans got the go-ahead run in the 5th inning. The Warriors tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the 6th inning with Ryan Miller (JR/Reno, NV) scoring on a Trojan error.
In the 7th inning, Sanchez scored to take the lead from a sacrifice fly out from Webster.
The Trojans tied the game in the 8th inning and then won in the 10th, 4-5.
Sanchez saw three at bats with two hits and Gurney had four with two hits.
In the final game, the Trojans scored two runs to start the game. Sanchez scored the first run in the bottom of the 1st inning on a wild pitch.
Hibl got an RBI single in the 3rd inning allowing Sanchez to tie the game 2-2.
The Trojans won the game in the 6th inning on an unearned run.
Skyler Yarborough (JR/The Colony, TX) pitched five innings and finished with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Next up for the Warriors is another conference weekend series against Presentation. The games will be held in Forest City, but the Saints will be treated as the home team. First doubleheader is on Saturday, March 24th starting at 1 p.m. The second doubleheader is on Sunday, March 25th at 12 p.m.
